A friend just did a fresh install of XP pro on a 500Mhz 128Meg ram PC. It
runs fine for about 10 minutes and then, even if nothing is running, it
freezes. Nothing works, he needs to hold the power in for 10 seconds or
pull the plug. I told him to try safe mode. Has anyone seen this kind of
behavior from XP??

thanks

This sounds like a hardware problem. Is your PC sufficiently ventilated?
And FWIW the system he's running is not really up to XPs robust
requirements, especially the 128 Meg RAM part.

I have a ThinkPad that is running XP. It shuts down the same and to bring
it back up, I need to press the Fn key by itself. It's part of power
management.
Good luck

It may be going into Standby and the system BIOS is not reacting
correctly. Check the Power options in Display properties under the
Screen Saver tab and set everything to Never, see how it behaves. If it
behaves normally then look at the BIOS APM settings, there may be some
askew in there.

A possibility is that it is a result of the mouse driver and the video
driver arguing over which controls the pointer. It is easy to check on
- Control Panel - Display - Settings, Click Advanced, and on the
Troubleshoot page reduce the acceleration slider one notch or two. If
one does it, there is negligible loss of performance: if two are needed
look for updated video drivers from the maker's site.
