Im having A Problem I Cant Find A Solution To...

Its a random event but happends almost on a daily basis. Ill be browing
though folders on my hard drive and when I open a folder it starts to load up
but hangs without showing any of the contents in it. I can skill minimize /
close the folder but when I hover the mouse inside of it it displays a hour
glass like its loading but it never does. If I click the X (close) button to
close the folder xp gives me the dialog box this folder has stopped
responding click to close and when I do that I lose my entire start bar and
all my desktop icons, sometimes they never come back and I have to reboot to
fix it. Also sometimes explorer.exe will stop responding. It dosent seem to
matter what folder it is, it could have lots of icons or just a folder with
another folder inside of it.

I went to http://safety.live.com at microsoft to scan for viruses and it
said im clean, im not sure if an update at windows update started to cause
the problem or if its a cache problem or what. Any Ideas what I could try to
fix it?

System
Windows Xp Professional + SP2
1 gig of ram
200 gig hard drive
direct x 9.0c

Thanks,
Brandon

You need to perform some troubleshooting steps to try and locate exactly where the problem is coming from.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr and press OK. Click the Application menu item on the left and look for any "X" error messages that coincide with when you last saw this behavior. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details, click the Copy Icon on the right side of the details dialog screen (looks like 2 pages of text) and paste the error details in a reply to this message. You only need to post the text starting with Event Type: and ending with the Description:. You can omit the Data section.

ie:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: <source>
Event Category: <category>
Event ID: <ID #>
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: <user name>
Computer: <computer name>
Description:
Hanging application <program>, <version>, <address>

Thank You! Ronnie Vernon MVP

I did what you asked and I have uploaded 4 screenshots for you to look at.
They are here...

I think from the screenshots Nview (Nvidia Graphcis Card Driver Component)
is obviouslly causing my problem. There has been a few times where a dialog
has come up asking me if I want to stop Nview because a program is not
responding.

Humm, im not sure I know of a way off hand how to disable Nview all the time
or if that will help me. I have downloaded the newest Nvidia driver
(91.47_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql) I could try to install that and see if
it helps... or maybe you have a better idea?

I did some looking in my Nvidia Control Pannel under Display Properties /
Settings Tab / Advanced buttion / Geforce FX5200 Tab /

I found under Desktop Management there is a "nView Desktop Manager" It has
an option to Turn off all The nView Desktop manager features, so it was
enabled. I disabled it and im going to see if that helps. Maybe I had this
option off before and when I updated my driver a while ago it turned it back
on. Anyway, ill give this a shot, if you can think of anything else let me
know.

Thanks,
Brandon
