One Firewall is sufficient. Most 3rd-Party firewall programs will disable
the Windows Firewall when they are installed.

It will work perfect together we have Sygate firewall installed on many
computers running Windows XP with activated firewall.

Are you sure the XP firewall IS actually running? In my experience, any of
the newer third-party software firewalls turn the XP one off automatically
on installation.

What's the point of having two software firewalls running in the first
place?

Yes I 100% sure that Windows XP firewall is running. We chcecked it by
trying to comoucate on different ports opend on one and closed on the
other firewall. Kerio is also working together with Windows XP firewall.
The best is Kerio, it allow you to save configuration to the file and
apply it on the other computer.

It is advisable to disable the Windows firewall 'before' installing any
third party firewall. Most third party firewalls - Zone Alarm, etc, will
disable the Windows firewall itself. Having two firewalls doesn not give you
double the protection.

I don't know Sygate in particular, but when you install many third-party
firewalls, they will turn off the Windows firewall. You can turn it back on
if you want to, but I don't recommend running two software firewalls. You
achieve no extra protection, you incur the extra overhead of running two
firewalls, and you run the risk (probably small, but not zero) of conflicts
between them.
See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/firewall.mspx

which includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a
different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical home
computers, home networking, and small-business networking scenarios. Using
two firewalls on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to
the Internet or other unexpected behavior. One firewall, whether it is the
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a different software firewall,
can provide substantial protection for your computer."

Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new version, the
update routine will probably turn it off first. If the Windows firewall
isn't running, you will temporarily be left with no running firewall, which
is very dangerous. So turn on the Windows firewall temporarily before doing
maintenance on your third-party firewall.

The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any third-party
firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping rogue programs trying
to call home, and is a better choice.

John, although I agree that one shouldn't run two firewalls, I disagree that
it is "advisable to disable the Windows firewall 'before' installing any
third party firewall." That would leave you with no firewall at all for some
period. Although that period is likely to be brief, it can take only a few
seconds of running without a firewall to get infected with things like
Blaster, Sasser, etc.

It's much safer to turn off the Windows firewall *after* installing the
third-party firewall, if it didn't happen automatically.

No, but it will make it totally unnecessary.

Unfortunately I didn't keep it, but I recently read and article that
said it is a good idea to keep the XP firewall on even while running a
third party (sygate). The reason stated was that when you go to boot
up or shut down, the 3rd party will is not active/deactivated till it
is fully booted or fully shut down. Win XP firewall protects your
system during this short period of boot up and shut down. If I can
find the article I will pass it on.

Ken when i install a firewall i disconnect my broadband connection. The same
applies to new anti virus software. The 'option' of disabling windows
firewall prior to installing a third party firewall is recommended by Zone
Alarm. Zone Alarm disables the windows firewall during installation of ZA,
therefore you are still left unprotected for the length of time it takes to
install ZA. Unless, of course, you disconenct your internet connection
first.
