HI,

I have eben through the forum here and tried everything
suggested to resolve the in-ability to change file
permissions. The permissions persistently remain at READ
ONLY. Even if I change it by removing the tick the system
asks me if it must apply to all the files/ folders etc and
when I say "yes" it appears to be changing the files..*the
screen refreshes etc* but when I re-open the folder
permissions the tick is back there in a shaded box...I
have change the permissions globaly under my C drive to
one of EVERYONE-FULL CONTROL and to all files /folders
below that level...nothing helps..

It used to work fine--about 4 days after installion it
started on it's own mission and I have not been able to
control it ever since...

Anyone with any other ideas..??

P.S. i AM ON A lan with onother PC (also with same version
XP)

Folders are not read-only. XP just marks all folders indeterminate by
default. It is a tri-state check box. Colored in is indeterminate, checked
is read-only, unchecked is normal. The folders are not read-only and should
work as normal. Just ignore the read-only box on folders. If you have a
piece of software that is having problems writing to a folder then try to
get an xp compatible version of the program. Or post the exact problems
you're having.
Most likely if it is a well written app then is it not the read-only check
box, more likely a permissions setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP does this by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:

or for other win versions:

Hi,

Thanks for the reply...I am using EASYPHP which requires
that certain folders are made CHMOD777 in order to upload
images. My images are not being uploaded to the folder
except in one case where the image was loaded but could
not be viewed in the web page I am developing...

I have to admit I have no idea what Easyphp is and what chmod777 is. I
suggest you try the makers of the programs tech support or read the kb
articles I provided and see if they help.

You have not looked properly. This is answered about twice a day. Read
only is an attribute that has no meaning for folders (the directories
are always open for writing), and XP makes an alternative use of it, to
indicate that the folder is Customised. You can change it and on Apply
it will ask if you want the change applied to all contained objects, but
the display of it for the folder will revert to greyed
