XP fdisk?

I just got my new hard drive from fedex today. It's a
7200rpm 60gb monster, and I want to install my xp home
onto it. I currently have xp on another 60gb hard drive
thats only 5400rpm.

I am wondering if I can plug the new hard drive into my
computer as is, format it to ntfs, partition it with a
8gb primary and 52gb secondary, put all my data in the
secondary, re-format the old drive, and install xp to the
7200. I would then transfer all my data back to the 5400,
and use the 7200 for os and program files.

So, can it be done?

P.S. Where are the saved mail files for OE6 kept on the
drive?

You lost me at the part where you re-format the old drive. Why would you do
that? It has all your stuff on it. You can maybe do that later after you
have the new drive at set up and running XP.

The new drive must be set up as the IDE master (assuming it's an IDE drive).
How to do this is dependent on how your PC is cabled and configured. So,
let's just assume you accomplish that and the old drive is now an IDE slave.
Now install XP on the new drive and you're more or less done. All your old
stuff is still accessable on the old drive. You can now move it around and
eventually clean up the old XP installation there.

Yes, you can almost do the above, but not exactly. A 60 gig hard drive is
really about 57 gig in real life.
My suggestion and what I would do if I wanted a clean install of XP on the
new drive would be to disconnect the old drive and install the new drive as
the primary master. Then boot from the XP cd and when prompted, set the size
of the partition to install XP at the space you desire. [I recommend 10 gig,
but 8 is sufficient], leaving the remaining space empty and unformatted.
After XP is running, you can then partition and format the remaining space
from Disk Management. After partitioning the drive, you can reconnect the
old drive setting the cable and jumper for the slave drive. You can now
retrieve the data from your hard drive at your leisure and when ready format
the drive from disk management.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

What I use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware -
30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

With the new drive plugged in as slave/secondary, boot the floppy,
Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on Partition work.
Highlight your C:,Copy, then on left select the new drive (HD1) and
Paste.

You might then consider a resize up a bit. Save making the second
partition until XP is in use

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply. Also make a check that this partition is in the same place in
the table as it was if you do a View MBR on the old one - if not use the
Up or down to correct it.

Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP. It will happily see the other drive with its existing
partitions. Make the second partition on the new drive now - Control
Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk Management and
look lower right for the graphic of the drive. R-click in the free
space and take Create Partition, going on to format

You may want to then copy the data across, and when all is safe in the
new home, use the Disk management again to delete the old partitions and
make a new single one there - same r-click method. And then adjust
drive letters of all but the C: for convenience. There is a lot to be
said for having two physical drives in use: One thing I do is use BootIT
NG to make an compressed image copy of my C: into a partition on the
other drive, which makes a very good base backup that could be restored
even if the main drive blew up totally and had to be replaced
