XP failure to shut-down

When I try to shut-down Windows XP, the process goes all the way to "Windows
is shutting down" on the screen, but the screen never blacks out. This
happens most of the time, but it has completely shut-down a couple of times.
How do I get it to completely shut-down. Thanks.
