XP Explorer tool (NOT IE) freezes in the "Search" Mode

Everytime I try to search my PC files using the Explorer, I get a failure,
the "program stops responding" instantly (regardless of what file parameters
I search for), and I must exit the program.
SP2 and all MS "push" XP program updates have been installed.
How can I get explorer search function working again?
SIMPLEST procedure, please.
