I have tried changing the default file view settings in
explorer from the silly large icons to the details view
and have hit apply to all folders in the Folder and view
toolbar. Only problem is it does not hold this setting and
reverts back to the large icons any suugestions as to
why and how to fix this ?

Even though XP is technologically ahead of it's
predecessors, it contains a lot of stuff that is
turned on by default, even though the average user is never
going to use it. Also, it still suffers from ridiculous bugs and
design issues and this is one of them.

Look at the folders fix in line item 2 at:

One approach is to increase the number of folder views that can be
retained (though that *ought* not to affect the default as set up). Go
to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm
and in the Fixes section, take 'Increase Folder View limit to 8000'
