XP Excruiciatingly slow

I have a peer to peer network. One XP Pro machine is almost brand new, but
from day one it is extremely slow--crawls-- on the network. What's odd is
that the problem is only one way.

For example, if I open a database on the slow machine from another
computer--no problem. But put that database on another computer and try to
open it from the slow one--it takes at least 5 times as long. Internet
access crawls as does any file transfer operation in any application.

The computer itself is fast enough--no problem opening files on the local
HD.

When waiting for the trickle of incoming packets, the local CPU doesn't seem
to be doing much--just waiting. There's no firewall or other filter running,
and all the computers are visible from one another.

Any clues anyone?

Thanks so much!

Jim,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Thanks for the reference. Unfortunately, I have not had any luck. I tried
the registry fix on Remote Machine, set the card to half-duplex on the slow
machine, and rearranged the order of the provider in Network advanced
settings. Still the same problem. Copying a 70 MB file from another system
takes about 2 minutes. If I copy it back, it takes about 10 seconds.

Thanks again, Jim

Jim,

next thing I'd do is use a different network adapter for
testing.

For good measure you could also swap the switch. If it is a
switch, the adapters can be set back to full duplex or automatic
detection. I would also swap the cables for a test.
