XP driver for Citoh thermal label printer EZ-4PS / Godex EZ-4PS ?????????????????????????

T

Track Vogel

I bought a Citoh EZ-4PS thermal label printer years ago and used it
without any problem under Windows 98. Now I have a new PC with Windows
XP, and I can't find a proper driver on the web. I found a few drivers
but none work properly.

The brand Citoh does not exist anymore apparently, those EZ printers
are now sold under the brand name of Godex. But I can't find any
official Godex site, and the drivers I download from their German
distributor site doesn't work properly either.

Does a proper XP driver for the EZ-4PS even exist?

Thanks,

Track Vogel

Hi Track, C-Itoh was a joint venture between ITOCHU Electronics
Corporation and CITIZEN WATCH however this partnership was dissolved at
the end of 2002.

Citizen does not provide support for printers sold before the split.

The manual for your printer can be found here:

http://www.citoh.de/data/manuals/um_ez-2p_4p_e.pdf

Unfortunately there is no specific driver for your printer on this site
however they do have a universal driver here:

http://www.citoh.de/englisch/support/driver/thermal-printer.htm

I think the problem may be getting a driver to both print the label AND
cut the label, am I right? If so you may have to just forget the cut
function.

I don't know but one possibility if you do not find one is to see if the
printer had an emulated standard mode like Epson M80, or IBM Proprinter
and see if one of those drivers will work if you get the printer into
the emulated mode.

That's the driver I tried, without any luck. I have the EZ-4PS, those
drivers are for either the EZ-4 or the EZ-4P. I don't know what the PS
stands for by the way.

I would be very happy if I could just the printer to work. I don't
even know if it has a cutter, never used it, don't intend to use it.

Thanks,

Track Vogel

Thanks. But what does emulated mode stand for? I see an option to
print to printer directly, is that what you mean?

Just a guess, but could it be "PostScript"?

No, some printers have an industry "standard" language built in them.
Dot matrix often had either Epson M or FX, or IBM Proprinter (or both)
because the drivers were readily available and many specialty
applications that were written would be designed around the most popular
printers of that time period. When laser printers appeared HP's
languages became the standard, so most laser printers had at least a set
of the full language within their firmware. In that sense they
'emulated' a different printer manufacturer so those drivers would work.
Not all printers had embedded emulations of "standard" languages and
code in them, but many did/do, for just this sort of situation, where
drivers aren't available from the OEM, or a special application was
written for a class of printers, the emulation would allow the printer
to still work with these special applications, although it might be
slower or have less features than the printer when using it's native driver.

Arthur, this printer looks to be a thermal label printer, much like a
Dymo labelwriter. If it was a dot matrix things would have been easier
as far as emulation goes :)

The PS i guess stands for Print/Slice as the non-cutting version is
LZ-4P, not PostScript.

It seems there is no XP driver for this printer, or it has fallen
between the cracks in the switch between C-Itoh and Godex. Seems
neither Itochu, Citizen or Godex wants to take responsibility for this
printer.

Sorry Track, you may have to give up on this one...

Thanks for the explanation.

Perhaps yet another perfectly usable piece of hardware hits the junk
pile due to a few lines of missing code ;-) When is this gonna end?

I just noticed that url has a fee for download (of $6.95 CAN) but if it
works, it seems cheap to get the printer going. Of course, if it's not
the right driver it's hardly worth 2 cents...

Here's what the next page says:

Your driver in under a minute, saving time-consuming processes.

Hi Art,

I had already tried the Nicelabel driver some time ago and nope, it
won't work with my printer.

Sad because this printer always worked great on my old PC with Win98
first edition, good simple but reliable piece of hardware.

I just plugged the model code in to Google and this came up:

http://www.helpdrivers.com/ingles/listado/dow.asp?codigo=51385

It claims to be the driver for this printer for the following OSs:

Windows 95-98-98Se-Me-NT4-2000-XP-2003

Maybe I stumbled on something???

I think I am going to give this a try, Arthur. BUT, since it claims it
works for both 98 and XP, maybe I should first just try to use the
driver that came with the printer, and that was intended for usage
under Win98? Now where did I put that floppy or CD-rom...

If I can't find that, I will purchase that driver from helpdrivers.com

I'll keep you posted.

I have a feeling these drivers helpdrivers is offering are the NiceLabel
Drivers, as the description is the same.

helpdrivers indicates somewhere on their website that they are not
charging for the drivers nor at they the providers, but they are
charging for the service of locating and distributing the information on
the location of them.

I was left with the impression that they are offering you the same
drivers that NiceLabel was giving away. I would confirm that the
drivers are different before buying them.

I do find it odd that the NiceLabel drivers, which mention your printer
specifically don't work. Could it be another configuration issue on
your end there?

Have you tried contacting NiceLabel and asking them if they had other
correspondence regarding your printer and that driver with XP?

I can try to see if Microsoft can make any suggestions, as I have some
connections with their printer driver division.

The filesizes are different, I checked that.

Another printer connected to the same parallel port works fine.

Not yet.

Let me first try a few things, I'll keep you posted.

Do you have an older computer that you could network up and maybe do it
that way, or dual boot XP/98? Neither are the perfect solution, but
maybe worth considering.
