VD BURN PHILIPS|SPD2413BM/17 20X %

Just intalled a new internal DVD RW (PHILIPS|SPD2413BM/17) in my Dell 400SC
with Windows XP SP2 with Media Center.

Edition. The power to the DVD drive works, as I can open and shut the drive
door. But Windows does not recognize the DVD drive as a drive (e.g Drive
E:\). In Device Manager under Disk Drives, it lists Prolific PL3507. I have
uninstalled that driver, rebooted and the driver gets reinstalled but Windows
still does not recognize the drive. I have unplugged all the cables to the
drive, waited a couple of minutes, and rebooted, but still no drive E:\.

Some other information: Since I installed the DVD drive, something has
gotten fouled in in my BIOS settings with my Secondary Drive settings. When
I boot WIndows, I get a prompt Secondary Drive 0 not found and Secondary
Drive 1 not found. I tried to adjust the settings in the BIOs to
automatically regognized the Secondary drive but it says NotFound.

I tried to updated the Firmare but when the install required it to find the
DVD player which it couldn't find.

I also tried to the recommendation on the KB of removing the upper and lower
filters http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314060 .

Any advice on what to do here?

Thanks in advance.

The Philips drive is an IDE unit.

The Prolific PL-3507 is a "Hi-Speed USB & IEEE 1394 Combo to
IDE Bridge Controller", a chip which would be used in an external
enclosure for disks. It is ATA/ATAPI compatible, meaning you should
be able to stick a DVD burner in the enclosure and have it work.

When I did this some time ago, I used Nero (6?) to complete the package.
Nero could find the optical drive in my external enclosure. I think
Windows could also see it. I don't have that setup any more, so cannot
comment further on what drivers were loaded etc.

So it doesn't sound like you are using the Philips drive on a ribbon
cable, if you can see references to Prolific in Device Manager.

If you are indeed using an external enclosure, make sure the jumper on
the optical drive is set to "master", before you install it in the
enclosure. Sometimes the instruction manual for the enclosure will
tell you about that. If you are already using the "master" jumper
and it didn't work, the next thing you try is the "cable select"
setting. "Cable select" might work for a cranky hard drive placed
in an enclosure.

Matt, are you installing the Dvd Drive on the secondary IDE Channel? Is
it alone or connected as slave or master with
another drive? Try a different IDE Cable and make sure you install the
red lined side next to pin 1. You can reverse it.

On a Dell you have to go into the BIOS and turn OFF the IDE channels that don't have anything
connected. Double check your jumper setting on the drive. If the BIOS doesn't see the drive
correctly, it will not pass the information onto Windows so Windows will also not see the drive.

Paul: many thanks for the reply. It was indeed the problem that the jumper
was set to slave, and I was using the master side of the cable. Simply
switching the jumper to master was the fix.

Thanks again.

Dave, Rich: thanks for the replies. It was the jumper setting on the DVD
player that had to be switched from slave to master. Its all working now.
Thanks for the helpful post.
