I got this message from an end user (reasonably tech-savvy), I've never
heard of this before, how do I fix?? Auto-logon would fix it neatly but
he's afraid of the security risks. The user has to press Ctrl-Alt-Del
to login.

For a couple of weeks now (even before you did the updates on my
computer) I have consistently had problems with Windows recognizing my
login the first time I try. I get an error message as if I have the
wrong login ID or password, and have to retype it. I retype (the
password only) and I get in. At first I figured I was just mistyping
the password but I have made a deliberate effort to be careful and it
still happens consistently.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix?? Is this the correct
newsgroup for this question??

Thanks, Tom

I would ask for the exact wording of the error message and then, if the
solution is not obvious, put it into an internet search engine to find
an explanation.

What is the message? If the computer is a domain member and cached logons
are disabled maybe the computer did not find a domain controller in time for
the initial logon. Checking the logs via Event Viewer [particularly
security] may also give some helpful information on what is going on.

Standard 'The domain could not log you on...' etc. etc. message.

We forced password change on the user and that seems to have fixed it.

Thanks for replying!!
