I have an XP Pro machine that will only display W2K classic windows and
buttons. XP isn't even an option under Display Properties > Appearance >
Windows & Buttons (dropdown). Where did the option go for XP styles?

click start\settings\taskbar and start menu\start menu and uncheck classic
start menu

But I want the classic start menu with the XP windows and buttons. This is
the way it's setup on all of our XP machines. The difference with this one
is that Windows and Buttons aren't available in Windows XP styles.

let me understand you correctly: You want the classic start menu with xp
style buttons? but you don't have that option in the drop down menu in your
display properties
correct?

what theme do you have selected? don't select xp or classic theme, try
another name like xyz etc. temporarily and see if the drop down menu
appears. You may have to restart.

| Correct.

that's the last option, i'm assuming that you are logged in as admin. Select
theme xp and restart before you do anything. If you choose xp start, do you
get the drop down menu in display, if you do then you may be able to get
away without reinstalling.

Check at Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance, click Settings
and in Visual Effects make sure that 'Use visual styles in windows and
folders' is selected. May be desirable to switch formally to 'best
performance, Apply, then back to Custom, Apply, then I would myself
unselect the top ten, which are very much eye-candy and Apply again. OK
out and restart
