XP display error + odd startup dialog box

I have two problems that I suspect are related, and could use some
help. First problem is that at irregular intervals, display output
ceases. The computer is still running (I can print from other
computers on the network), but has no output to the display. Second
"problem" is that during startup, after the Welcome page but before I
see the desktop, I get odd dialog boxes. Title is ten or so
unintelligble characters (symbols, Chinese, etc.) followed by
"c:\windows\system32" or "startup.ocx". Usually two characters inside
the dialog box, a Chinese character followed by a vertical
double-headed arrow. I click OK and startup finishes as normal. I'd
really appreciate any help on this.

What happens when booted into safe mode?

Thanks for the reply. In safe mode, I still get the dialog box, but it
only has a couple of characters in the title bar and one character
inside the box. In normal mode, I also sometimes get "plugin.ocx"
after the random characters. The character strings are different every
time.
