XP disk from Microsoft when none provided by OEM

I read somewhere that if you were not provided with an XP install disk
when you purchased your computer that Microsoft would provide one. Is
that true or did I read what I read wrong? I need to reinstall XP Home
on my computer and have the original activation key. I would like to
install a clean copy of XP. I can get the drivers from OEM and I am
sure I can get an install disk from the company as well but would
rather get a clean XP disk.

Hi,

You heard or read wrong, Microsoft does not provide disks for OEM
installations. All support is provided by the manufacturer, and it is the
maker from which you need to request a disk.

No.

Yes.

I need to reinstall XP Home

How do you know? Why? Although it's *sometimes* necessary, it rarely is the
best solution to a problem, and there are usually far easier, less draconian
solutions available.

Post the details of your problems here. It's likely that someone can lep you
and a reinstallation won't be necessary.

Short of buying one, the only place where you *might* be able to get one for
free (no guarantees; you'll have to ask) is from your OEM.

Yes, but you would need the original installation disk to accomplish this.

You can make a backup copy of the current installation to a CD/DVD using a
third party imaging program.

If you have a CD, you can burn a backup copy of that CD. If you don't have a
CD, there's nothing to back up.

You can't copy the installed XP on your hard drive, and use it do a clean
reinstallation, if that's what you mean.

u can burn a copy of xp thats on ur hdd for clean reinstall if ur pc is brand new (never on internet) ?? but if pc has been used on internet for a few mounths the cd burned would contan virus, it would do reinstall but it wouldn't be clean !!or is there some copy right stuff that interfers with burning copy??

Ken Blake, MVP

No. You can not burn a copy of XP at all, whether it's been on the internet
or not.

You are perhaps thinking about making an image of your drive. Yes, you can
do that, but it's *very* different from creating an XP CD. .

but if pc has been used on

No, it would contain a virus only if you had done a poor job of maintaining
the system and ensuring that you didn't get infected. My installations here
are considerably older than a few months, have been on the internet all that
time, and none of them contain viruses.

it
would do reinstall

No, it will *not* do a reinstall An image is a backup--a copy of the
installation. You can restore from that backup image, but that's a
completely different thing from a reinstallation.

but it wouldn't be clean !!or is there some copy
right stuff that interfers with burning copy??

No. There's no problem making an image of the drive, but to make a copy of
the installation CD, you need an installation CD.
