I have a liscense for windows xp and the product key and the ativation key...
I just dont have a copy of the darn cd. I bought a computer that came with
windows xp. well it died... the hard drive is wiped and windows is no longer
installed on it. I have all the information written down in my records but i
have no way of installing windows hp (home edition) on my new pc even tho i
own a liscence. Is there some way to get just the install disc without the
liscence for a drasticly reduved rate.

I dont see any reason i should have to buy another copy of windows when i
already own one.

Please help?

Burn a copy of a friends disk, it must be the same version of course,
and then install it with *your* CD key.

If Windows XP came preinstalled on the original computer, it is most likely
OEM.
OEM is normally permanently tied to the original computer regardless the
condition of the original computer.
If the above is the case, you may need to buy Windows XP for the new
computer.
One of the many reasons you paid less for OEM than retail.

If Windows XP is retail, contact Microsoft:

Have you tried contacting the company you bought the system from and
explained your problem to them??
They most likely would send you a replacement copy of XP at a very low cost

Based upon your description, you had an OEM license for WinXP. An
OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

NO, Guys - He Wants to install XP on the SAME PC it was on before. I am
assuming Windows XP Came Pre-Installed on the PC when you bought it. In this
case you will need a Windows XP OEM CD. If you had Home Edition, you will
need a Home Edition OEM CD, if you had Pro, you need a PRO OEM CD. You can
see if you can track down just the CD online, or you can buy another OEM CD
with Home and Code on E-Bay, re-install, and have an extra license key in
case this ever happens to another computer, or you want to install XP on a
new PC.

Hope it Helps,

"...on the SAME PC"?
Really?
Perhaps you should read the OPs post again

"well it died", old PC.
"no way of installing windows hp (home edition) on my new pc", note the word
"new"

Okay, my father has the opposite problem. His HD died and I just bought him
a new one. He has the CD but does not have the cd-key. XP came installed on
the computer when he purchased it new (2001), but it didn't have the sticker
stuck on the computer like most OEM installations. I remember seeing some
certificate looking thing with foil looking cd-key. Is there anyway he can
get a new installation key to use with his XP cd by calling MS? He has the
original purchase order from the vender he ordered the computer from. Again,
I don't think it was an OEM install.

Thanks.

I'd encourage you Dad to contact MS and explain the situation.
Keep in mind if this is a retail-purchased Windows XP, the CD key is inside the original folder of the retail package (iirc, bright orange sticker). If OEM Windows, contact your vendor.
