XP dial-up problem

P

Philip Andrews

Hello,

Looking for advice and help, please: I can't get the Internet Connection
wizard to allow me to create a new dial-up connection in Windows XP Home,
because both of the dial-up options that follow 'Make a manual connection'
are greyed-out. Similarly, I can't make a connection using an automatic
program on a British Telecomm CD, presumably for the same reason.

The modem is showing OK in the Device Manager ... Hardware list; the
driver seems to be loaded OK; dialling into pcAnywhere activates the modem,
so I think that the hardware is all OK. I have no idea where to look in the
settings, but am computer literate in Wind98SE so will/may at least
understand what I'm told.

Fingers crossed - and TIA for all suggestions as to what to do about this
problem.

Cheers,

Philip Andrews

Thanls for that link - I followed the instructions, and re-installed
after deleting the specified Registry keys, but still there's no modem
dial-up available. Is there any chance that spyware or a virus has zapped
the thing and left something set wrongly elsewhere in the Registry?
Ad-Aware, Spybot and McAfee all swear that the thing is clean, so I'm a bit
stuck.

Cheers,

Did you have a virus or other malware? If you didn't, then your Winsock2
is probably fine. You can always reset it, though. If you have pre-SP2
then use the WinsockXPFix:

ttp://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Otherwise, go to Start>Run and type

netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]

there helps.

Hi Malke,

then use the WinsockXPFix:

Otherwise, go to Start>Run and type
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]

I ran the WinsockXPFix program, and then found that couldn't get into
the Connection Wizard at all - oops! but maybe SP2 was already in place

Next, I tried installing WinXP Service Pack 2 - and wa-la! all was well,
dial-up is back and everything else seems to work OK too.

I finished off the job by defragging the beast 4 times in a row, and
both boot-up and operating speeds have now also come back to normal.

Many thanks for your help - whatever you're paid, it's not enough )

Regards,

Philip
