XP detects CD/DVD drives but doesn't detect CDs or DVDs

I am running XP Pro. I have a Yamaha CRW-F1E and a Pioneer DVD-RW
106D.

Both these have worked perfectly well (ish) for months and months. All
of a sudden, and I can't recall adding any additional software, they
aren't working.

XP detects the drives, and I can see them in explorer, but it doesn
not detect any CDs or DVDs you put in. It just keeps saying that I
should put in a disk. Needless to say, can't read or write to either.
The drives are visible in XP, WMP and all third party buring software,
but none of them can detect any drive contents.

I have uninstalled all my third party writer software, I have
uninstalled all the drives, I have run registray cleaners, run a virus
scan and scanned for spyware.

I have run windows update and I am as up to date as one can be and as
clean as clean can be. Damn things still don't work. Drives visible,
disks not detected. Stick media in and you get the usual whirring and
whizzing.. but then nothing.

Before I go down the root of reinstalling the PC, can anyone offer any
guidance.. I am so frustrated.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure one has been set to master
the other to slave in the BIOS??

And you've done the same physically to BOTH
the CD and the DVD in the case? With the jumpers?

I have the exact same problem. Cleaned Registery, updated
drivers, and replaced the drives to resolve.

Have checked and the master/slave settings are fine. As I said, this
all worked before and I have not made any hardware changes, and I am
convinced I have not made any software changes apart form the
automatic windows updates. I would be unsure which restore point to
revert to, so it might be a case of a complete rebuild if I get no
joy.

I have seen posts by other people that have experienced the same
problem, but no solutions yet. Incredibly frustrating. Guidance
appreciated.

I have been suffering from this same see-the-drive-not-
the-disk infirmity. Micron tech support suggested
connecting either the CD/DVD drive to the primary cable
with the HD, which I did and the drive showed up but not
the content except after each re-boot. That presumably
rules out a problem with the secondary IDE controller.
He suggested if that was the case do a install repair.
Did that today after a day of making sure everything was
backed up. Same problem, but this time XP did recognize
that the new HD I installed after the problem started (as
a place to back up to) was infact formattted.

I posted an earlier message, but didn't get much help.

So I am anxious to see if someone has another idea on
how to fix this!

After several hours of searching this news group and 2-1/2 hours with microsoft technicians. we uninstalled the InCD software that come with Nero burn and the Nero mixer software and it was fixed. I might add that the drives all worked in safe mode, so that is one way we were quickly able to tell that the problem was a software problem.

Hopefully, others will read this before they replace the cables to the drives, do a repair install, unhooked everything from the computer but the cd/dvd drives, mouse and keyboard. Back up the registry a couple of times.... ;-)

Good luck.
