XP Desktop Constantly Refreshing

XP home edition, my desktop all disappears except for
wallpaper and then refreshes the icons.This happens every
few minutes and even goes on in the background while I
have an application going. Usually, it does not kill the
application.
I have scanned for viruses, bots etc. and have done a
restore to a few months ago when I did not have the
problem.
Any advice welcome.

Check to see if you have Active Desktop enabled. If you do, disable it.
