desktop refreshing issue

I'm using XP Pro.

Recently, I've been having a desktop refreshing issue. Here is what happens:

The computer freezes for several seconds (I'm able to move the cursor, but cannot access or do anything). Then, the desktop and quick launch icons disappear for a few seconds, leaving only the background. All of the desktop icons reappear, but some of the quick launch icons do not.

I first noticed this about a week ago. I'm runnimg Panda anti-virus and firewall and am using Spybot and AdAware. As far as I know, I have no viruses, worms, spyware or adware present.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

By your statement, it sounds like your system needs a cleanup or cookies, temporary and temp internet files, disk cleanup, defrag, etc. Your bogging your
system's resources down with unnecessary startups.

Byte,

Theanks for the suggestion, but I've already delted all of those items using "disk cleanup" in the hard drive properties. I also defraged both in regular and safe mode.
