Steve

Please can anyone tell me if I should install the latest
Windows XP Security Update (KB 810217)- "A security issue
has been identified in FrontPage Server Extensions..."
even though I do not have Microsoft FrontPage installed?

Many thanks for your time and trouble.

No.
This is for "server" extensions used by
hosting companies, or people who have
IIS installed on their machines.

But he shouldn't be getting it as a critical alert if he wasn't running the SE locally
- Yes install it if you have the SE on your machine

Halleluyah!
Steve your post gave me the hint how to fix my problem.
DO NOT install KB 810217 if you don't have server
extensions on your machine.
I just moved to a new computer and installed FP and of
course installed the "critical update" for FP. Then I
found FP wouldnt' work right. Banged my head against the
wall for 2 days.
After your post, I went to Control Panel and removed that
update, and voila!, FP is working.
Thanks for your post.
Dave
