Increasing problems with FrontPage.

K

Kes

For the last number of months I have had numerous problems arising with many
of the FrontPage aspects, from general website editing to problems with my
internet server. The last problem that I had(and still have) prompted this
reply:
Microsoft has discontinued FrontPage and has ceased upgrading or patching
the product. As of 2006 it has been end of life, we can no longer guarantee
that FrontPage will work on our systems and know that eventually a security
patch will break FrontPage. The first thing you really need to do is get
away from FrontPage ASAP. FrontPage is a dead product that we are barely
supporting. We basically install and uninstall the extensions at this time.
If a future security patch kills those extensions and there is no work around
found, then its going to be a major issue for anyone who relies on this
product.

THIS REALLY GAVE ME A SHOCK! I have used FrontPage for quite a number of
years and on checking out some alternative programs Dreamweaver, coffecup
etc. changing over is going to be a major, major operation. Having said
that, it does perhaps explain why there are all these FrontPage related
problems cropping up.

In addition to Steve's comments, FrontPage extensions are still supported
by Microsoft on Windows 2003 servers and will be for at least 2 more years
until Server 2003 reaches end of support, and they are supported by RTR
(www.rtr.com) on Windows 2008 servers.

If you are hosted on a Windows 2003 (or later) server, then any *server*
problems are due to the competence (or lack thereof) of your host.
FrontPage (the program) has not changed for several years, and Windows
updates in Windows XP (I cannot comment on Vista) have not affected it in
any way.

Kes

Steve - Thank you for the information. I didn't really want to change
programs as I am "comfy" using FrontPage. Thanks again.

Thank you Ron for your very helpful info plus your comment about "problems
being due to the competence (or lack thereof) of your host" - well I think
that you may have hit the nail on the head there!

Also keep in mind that just because MS is dropping support for server
extensions, it doesn't mean the ISP/Web Hosts have to or will. There are
several hosts who have been reporting they will still be offering extensions
even though they are out of support for some systems.

what hosts are out there that you recommend for frontpage hosting? I have
been a winsave, then gate (who bought out winsave) user for the last 9 years.
Recently I have become extremely unhappy with their tech service which has
moved offshore and their customer service, which can't seem to solve anything.

I was thinking of switching my 60+ sites somewhere else (perhaps Godaddy?),
so I am looking for recommendations and testimonials.

Thanks!

We've been hosting our sites on our own in-house server for years, but have
decided to move them to another host. Crystal Tech was highly recommended to
me, and I've moved 4 webs so far. I think they are excellent and the service
is impeccable. The response to service or general questions is fast, fast,
fast.

I have used Webhost4life ( http://www.webhost4life.com ) for 5 years
without problems. Many users have problems hosting with GoDaddy - avoid
GoDaddy for web hosting, especially when FrontPage extensions are involved.

I will check them out asap as I am ready to start moving. How is their
pricing?

One question....is their tech support American? No offense, but I can't
stand offshore tech support who can barely understand english...it drives me
crazy trying to explain something to them!!!

I've got a couple sites at everity.com and can't say enough good about them.
Great host.

Other sites that I was very interested in were:
cyberland.com
kionic.com
nitrozone.com

All are planning to continue FP Extensions for quite a while... and have
good reviews (a key criteria, I think)

I hope this helps!

what hosts are out there that you recommend for frontpage hosting? I have
been a winsave, then gate (who bought out winsave) user for the last 9 years.
Recently I have become extremely unhappy with their tech service which has
moved offshore and their customer service, which can't seem to solve anything.

I was thinking of switching my 60+ sites somewhere else (perhaps Godaddy?),
so I am looking for recommendations and testimonials.

Thanks!

Also keep in mind that just because MS is dropping support for server
extensions, it doesn't mean the ISP/Web Hosts have to or will. There are
several hosts who have been reporting they will still be offering extensions
even though they are out of support for some systems.

Tom,

Do you know a "security-image-verification" form program that you recommend
that integrates well with FP2003?

I have always used the FP forms, but the amount of spam i get seems worse
and worse.

If its easier, my email is guru at yourmarketingneedshelp . com

Thanks!

WOW! That was borderline rude. I actually did that a couple of days ago and
it hadn't generated any responses so I was merely asking somebody (you) that
had been helpful on something else. Please excuse me for bothering you and
(in your mind) VIOLATING board etiquette. Shame on me! It won't happen
again. Please accept my humble and sincere apologies...
