Xp Crashes - Mup.sys

Yesterday I did a Windows Update and continued using my computer. Everything was going great. This morning I woke up, booted my computer and after a couple of minutes Windows froze and then rebooted. I was then unable to reboot. I would come to the safe mode menu and regardless of the option chosen, the system would freeze at the mup.sys file. I ended up formating and reinstalling XP. From what I can see this is an increasing problem. I thought it may have been a virus but there seems to be a link to the Windows Update. I have seen it mentioned in several postings across several websites that people only had this problem after updating Windows. Any advice would be greatfull

Info I found on Google . . .

1)MUP.sys is Microsoft's Multiple Uniform Naming
Convention Provider (MUP), It controls network traffic.

2)The two largest culprits of freezes at mup.sys were
either AGP graphics cards or USB2 PCI cards.

The consensus of all the articles I read was that mup.sys
is probably not the problem. The problem is usually
related to recent hardware changes or a BIOS setting.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Good Luck !

It is probably nothing to do with Mup.sys. That just happens to be the
last file (usually) that gets loaded. So something locked during the
next phase initialisation, and it is very difficult to know what.
