XP could only format 128GB out of my 300GB (external) Hard Disk

I just install a 300GB Maxtor 10 External HDD.
First tried to connect it thru Firewall, but did'nt luck. Then tried via
USB, this time HDD has been found but detected as Maxtor 6 HDD.
In "Computer Management/Disk Management" I could only initialize and format
a Primary Partition of 128GB.
Where's the remainder ?
On Maxtor's site I found a software "big_drive_enabler.exe" but didn't help
me.
Could you ?
Thanks a lot...

You may need to get a BIOS update for the Motherboard.

Check in the Manual for hard drive limitations and also on the
manufacturer's website for ab appropriate update.

Remebr to download all the instructions to perform a BIOS update [Flashing
BIOS] as this is a very specific function and any mistakes can render the PC
into a stae of uselessness: and may be unrecoverable.

And why should he have to update the BIOS, if he tries to connect through
USB, pray tell??

Ne really, DiBa, what's the OS? XP with or without either SP1 or SP2??

Pardon me for butting in, but this has bothered me for a while. The
last 'off the shelf' machine I bought was a Tandy 1000 man years ago.
Since then I have always assembled my own or had a local shop build one
to my specs. The Tandy had a reasonable manual and all the MB's in the
assembled ones had very good manuals. I can't help but wonder if
today's Dell's, Compaq's, etc. come with manuals that would reveal the
sort of info you mention.

Thanks and, again, pardon the interuption.

Update to SP1 or 2
if you already created partition just use Partition Magic 8.0 to resize it
full capacity or start from beginning.
WinXP prior SP1 had NTFS limit of 138Gb.

I'm running XP SP2...
so normallty this must be just fine to detect big HDD's.
You're sure no BIOS update is necessary for USB drives ?

(An aside: > > > > First tried to connect it thru Firewall, but did'nt luck
No, you shouldn't need newer BIOS, although I can't be sure. What's your
mobo and BIOS version? A newer one xists?

I've read here, that it might help to delete everything under USB in device
manager (Start->Run: devmgmt.msc), unplug external disk, boot abd let OS
re-detect USB ports, then (if there's something "enhanced" under USB)
connect the ext. disk again and see if it detects it.

(My computer (Athlon 1.2GHz, Asus A7V133-C, BIOS 1009, XPproSP1) most of the
times detects my USB HD as "Hi-Speed device plugged into OLD USB port. To
get full speed, plug it into an enhanced port", which this is.. Add-on USB
2.0 card)

There is another possibility here too. The external casing may not
support drives larger than 128 GB. If this drive is a retail external
drive, this is not going to be the case, but it is a possibility if you
made this.

Also, be sure to check Disk Management (Right click on My Computer,
click Manage, click Disk Management) to make sure the computer even sees
the full capacity of the drive.

Yeah, forgot that.. I have too a cheapo (45eur) that takes max 240GB...

Could the problem reside in the external case, that doesn't support large
drives ? Could be...

Disk Management doesn't see the entire size of the Drive.
I tried also with Partition Magic 8, same result.

- I tried maxtor's Big Drives Enabler : no success
- Enterring the BIOS , I can't see anithing about enabling 46-bit LBA
- I also read about Intel Application Accelerator, but not every chipset are
supported, and my system does not indicated the chipset used (only Intel®
Pentium® 4 Northwood-processor (tot 3.06 GHz))
- There's a newer BIOS version, I should maybe try to flash it !

Oh yes, I forgot to mention my PC type :
It's an ACER ASPIRE 1700 notebook (Pentium IV, 3.06GHz, 512 DDR) running XP
Home SP2

I was already running SP2.
PM8 didn't help : can't see more than 128Gigs
But thanks for answer.

If you are looking to buy new external case USB2.0 Firewire combo than let
me know.
I had 200Gb HD and it worked without any problems (one partition)

Okey,
I Flashed the BIOS (Phoenix) v.A3B26 to the A3B42, this doesn't helped.
The installed chipset should be SiSM650... I'll will inform if it is
compliant with 48-Bit adressing.
In the meantime, I submitted a request to the Computer Manufacturer.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for assistance, I really appreciate.

After reading all the facts, your system should fully support a 300 GB
HD and I am betting it is the controller card inside the external
casing. Perhaps a jumper is set wrong, but it is more likely that the
controller card does not support drives larger than 128 GB ;)
