xp connections

I have an xp home computer which I want to direct connect to my xp pro
notebook. I hooked up serial cable, cat5 to the net cards, phone cable to
the modems. I rand the network wizards and the advanced connection wizards.
They just won't talk. There is some little thing I'm not doing. Any ideas
folks?

How do you connect the Home Computer to the DSL Modem, ethernet or USB?
