XP Client drops LAN connection

I have a new XP workstation in our accounting department. From time to
time the user reports that QuickBooks loses the connection to the
server based data file (and QB pops up an error that it has lost the
connection to the file.) I also get a Windows XP "Delayed Write
Failed" error message in the tray.

I suspect this is due to a momentary loss of the network connection.
When I attempt to connect to the web or other shared network drives
all is OK.

How can I troubleshoot what is happening and are there any known
issues/remedies to this??

Have you checked the event logs on the PC in question to see if there's
anything illuminating there?

Yes, I did that before I posted a request for help.

Although I see "delayed write failure" errors [in the log file] it
doesn't show anything else. I suspect the computer is dropping the
connection to the LAN momentarily. I can duplicate the error by simply
unplugging the NIC from the patch cord while in QuickBooks (same error
and same reaction.) QuickBooks immediately throws up an error and you
have to restart the program.

There are three users using that program and the other two do not have
issues (so it's isolated to this one computer.) The writes are
occuring on the server's shared drive.

Someone posted a message to disable "turn off this device to conserve
power" (it's a desktop after all.) so I tried just that.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Clearly something physical is happening to the connection so check all
elements of the network between the troublesome PC and the center of the
network - NIC, patch cable, switch port, and so on.

I have a similar problem with xp sp2 systems that have run flawlessly thru
tax season etc. However after I installed the security updates of 6/15/2005,
I started to get the "delayed write failed" error when running Peachtree 2004
from one of the workstations. When i checked the event viewer(system) I see
the error 50 which points to a SMB error. This only fails with Peachtree.
Quickbooks, Ultratax etc run flawlessly. I have called in 2 other techs,
changed switches, changed registry settings, and suffer a number of migraine
headaches. It is not a consistant problem, since we are sometimes able to
process a whole set of invoices and other times it fails after 2 payroll
checks.
I have numerous documents of others with the same problem and all different
solutions.
