Intermittent LAN connection

T

Tom Brown

A friend of mine in the same building on the same LAN loses his connection
all the time. It is a wired connection and just after bootup, it shows
connected at 100 Mbps. Then, almost immediately it disconnects. Then,
after a short while, it reconnects for few minutes. He has tried plugging
his laptop into the network cable of other known working ports (like my
connection) and the same thing happens. He is also able to access another
wireless network at the same time.

Any clues?

Sounds like the network card in the PC is bad. Try removing or disabling it
and putting in a new one.

Unfortunately, its a built-in LAN connection in the laptop so it's not that
easy to swap it out.

Thanks,

Tom

Get a PC-Card network adapter and disable the onboard adapter for testing
purposes.

Or a USB network adapter. (Sorry, late thought after I pressed Send. <G>)

Richard,

That's a good plan and one I just thought of a few hours ago. I am just
trying to find a good PMCIA Lan Card to borrow.

Yes, I also have some of my best "brainstrokes" right after I press the send
button. Or, even worse, I have second thoughts about sending something ...
too late! <G>

Thanks,

Tom
