After reformating my hard disk, I am unable to install XP as the setup program requires Windows and will not run on DOS. I boot with my old Windows 98 boot diskette.
Is the XP CD bootable? if so how do I boot from it? should I change BIOS?
I am tempted to install the old 98 first and then install XP, but that is not clean install.
any help will be appreciated

Yes.

If you mean change to boot sequence in BIOS, yes.

Boot the XP CD and follow the on-screen instructions.

Don't install Windows 98 first!!!! Go into your System Setup (BIOS), find the boot
sequence of drives and make your CD ROM drive the first drive in the boot sequence. Exit
and Save Settings. Boot with the Windows XP CD and setup should begin. If it's a Windows
XP UPGRADE CD, when you're notified that there is no prior version of Windows on the
system, swap the Windows XP Upgrade CD for the Windows 98 CD and give the path to that CD.
After setup scans the Windows 98 CD and determines upgrade eligibility, swap back the
Windows XP Upgrade CD and continue the Windows XP install. Make sure NOT to activate on
the internet, or use a connection to the internet until you enable the Windows XP
firewall, or install another firewall.

PLEASE do NOT post a question a second time in five minutes. It may
take 24 hours before someone around the world gets round to it and this
just wastes peoples time and patience
