XP Clean Install, Which Edition?

JD

Let me try and simplify my question.

I have Windows 98SE and I'd like to do a clean install of XP onto a new
HD. I have the 98 SE disk.

Which edition of XP should I purchase? Home or Pro, Upgrade or Full
Program? Or OEM?

Unless you need or want to join a domain you should just get the Home
Edition Upgrade version. The full and Professional versions cost about
twice as much and most home users buying these versions are paying for
things they don't need or will never use.

XP Home and Professional are identical except that Professional includes a
few features (mostly related to security and networking) missing from Home?
Most home users don't need and would never use these extra features and will
see no benefits by choosing Professional.

Also note another point, not included in any of the above: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

Upgrade or Full
Program?

Since the Upgrade version is much cheaper, contains exactly the same
software, and you qualify for it, the Upgrade version is what you should
get. Note that this is not the same question as whether to do a clean
installation or an upgrade. Cobtrary to what many people think, you *can* do
a clean installation with an Upgrade version, simply by insert yor Windows
98 CD.

I almost always recommend against OEM versions. The Upgrade version is
almost the same price as the OEM version and comes without its restrictions
