Hi,

Is there a function in XP setup where Windows can check to see that all
it's os files are there and if not, copy the missing or corrupted files
to from the setup disc?

Thanks

John

The System File Checker (as indicated) will , by default, verify 3498
files that XP considers important protected files.

Unless your system has been compromised by malicious software or the
built in Windows File Protection function is broken SFC should find
nothing to do. If it does, you have some other problem.

If you have SP3 installed and an SP1 or SP2 installation CD, SFC /
scannow will complain - a lot. This is because it is trying to match/
compare files and the installed SP does not match what the SP on the
installation CD.

To prevent this, you can use your older XP installation CD to make a
new installation CD with SP3 included and then tell sfc /scannow to
use the up to date CD as a reference. This is a good thing to have
anyway in case you need to fix something some other day.

If you have a store bought system and no XP installation media
(typical), there are some other adjustments you might need to make so
SFC will be happy. Maybe it is that way now, so try it and see what
happens.

Note that SFC /cscannow will not run in Safe Mode as is sometimes
suggested.

Thinking that running sfc /scannow will work right out of the chute is
an expectation that generally exceeds reality unless you are prepared
in advance.

It most certainly should run without a hitch when all the pieces are
in place and result in a warm fuzzy feeling, but I have personally
never seen it resolve any problem that was not caused by something
else and will never even recommend it, but that could just be me.

The advice to "run sfc /scannow" is rarely preceded by the "before you
run sfc /scannow..." message resulting in more confusion and questions
shortly afterwards.

Please do try it though and see how you get on. It won't hurt
anything and you should want it to work. If it doesn't work, we can
make it work.

If you are having some particular issue of suspicious files, describe
what the issue is and we can help with that.

a windows xp cd is required
in order to transfer genuine
files from it and onto the hard
drive.

there are a couple of methods
to do the above.

1 is a executing a repair installation
or
2 is running sfc /scannow

however, in order for the above to
work,

the xp cd version must be the same
version as the o.s. on the hard disk.

in other words if you have an xp
cd that is version sp2 but the
version on the hard drive is sp3,

then you cannot replace any
files using the xp cd.

-----------------------------

there is however a work around.

either you can slip stream the sp3
file with your sp2 files and make
a functional and bootable xp sp3 cd

"or"

you can uninstall the sp3 update
via add / remove programs which
will revert your system back to sp2.

therefore as long as the version on
the hard drive matches the version
of the cd,

you can then synchronize the system
files between the hard drive and
the cd.

-------------------------

have you double checked system
performance in safe mode.

if windows in safe mode functions
perfectly,

then the core system files on the
hard drive are intact and
do not need synchronizing.

thus whatever issue you may be
experiencing is something other
than missing or corrupted system
files.

Thanks guys!

I really do appreciate your time and expertise and will look at the
methods to try as soon as I am able.

Happy New Year..
