XP Cannot recognize USB printer device Vs DCOM errors

Hi,

THank you for your help in advance.

This problem is little strange. I have a Dell 270 PC with all current XP OS
udpates (running XP Pro). I tried to plug in a new HP 1022n USB printer to
it. There is an error told that "the OS could not recognize the USB Devices.
It could be malfunctioned...etc". I installed the driver with the HP CD
provided.

In Device manager, I could see Unknow Device in USB instead of USB Printing
Device.

I have another same model PC with same pritner but that one installed just
fine.
a
At the same time, I also found some DCOM error on this PC which the other
one does not have. The error ID is 10016 is "The application-specific
permission setitings do not grant localt activation permission for the COM
server applicationw tih CLSID...... This security persmission can be modified
using the Component services administrative tool."

I am not sure if the DCOM error is related to my added printer problem.

Thank you for your help!

It generally should not matter, even after you plug in your USB device you
can install the drivers and it should work.

Do this and see if it works, go to Computer Management, and then go under
Device Manager. You should now see a yellow triangle with a exclamation
point in it in front of the icon where the drivers need to be installed.

Right click and click on update driver, this should open up the wizard and
select the location of the driver from your d: drive. This should transfer
the driver files, and fix the issue.

Hi,

Thank you again for your respsnse. To answer your question...

Yes, I did follow the instruction that I install the driver first and up to
some point I was asked to connect the printer with the USB.

Another thing is.... I also tried to go to property of "Unknown Device" and
try to update the driver from there. But at the end, it would just say the OS
cound not find the related hardware...

Remmeber... I just installed the another same model pritner on another same
kind Dell PC wth the same driver and that one worked fine.

Also, I also saw some DCOM errors everything I tried to install the printer.
I am not sure if it is related to the problem so I put the info here too.

That is why I said it was weird.... It should have been very easy and
straight-forward... Anyone has any other thoughs?

If all the things you mentioned have not worked for you, see if you can get
the printer replaced. Or test the printer on another PC and see if it works.

Hi Nishi,

In fact, I tried another same model printer with the pc and it did not work
either. I thought it was the printer issue :)

Do you think if it is related to the DCOM errors I mentioned? Some
permissions got messy up so the printer could not be installed correctly. I
tried both Local admin and domain admin but the results are the same.

ARe you Japanese ?

Thank you again!
