I hae 9 PC computers in my office, all networked, 2 windows 98, 7 with
Windows XP home ed. We are online continuously (DSL) and have all units set
for NO automatic updates unless approved.
7 days ago, 3 machines (all XP) have changed their way of shutting down at
night and booting up the next morning.
Ever since going to XP when it came out, all machines have been set for the
classic mode and we do not allow any windows updates other than what is
necessary (SP2). No games are played, no windows messenger and none of the
extras that came with XP were used. All programs we use are veteran programs
that we are aware of.
Each computer has Zone Alarm Pro Firewall, Ad-Aware SE Pro, AVG AntiVirus
protection and all are kept up to date daily or weekly. Email is only
accepted if it is known and we are strictly business.
When booting, Windows XP has always booted up with the black splash screen
and gone straight to the desktop, without prompts for passwords or anything
else.
Now, when booting fresh in the am, the booting process stops short of
bringing the desktop up and the normal black splash screen is not there...
Instead, it gives me a small 1x3 inch box that shows the computer's name in
one field, and prompts me for a password in the other. None of my computers
have a password assigned. This is what windows 98 machines do when networked,
but never happened to me prior to this using Win XP. The XP machines have
always just booted up to the desktop.
On shutting down, instead of the normal dialog box with the 3 buttons for
either changing users, closing or restarting, I get a dialog box like
"windows ME" used to pop up with... options to shut down, reboot, update
itself etc..
This is occuring on only 3 machines. And this all happened without me
resetting anything. There are only 3 others that operate computers here and
they all depend on me for their IT and do not have internet privilages.
I'm pretty good at dealing with windows, harware, software and
troublshooting, but this has me baffled so does anyone know what's going on
here?
Anyone?
