Windows XP shutdown and bootup problems

Shutting down is very slow, even after the message "windows is now shutting
down" appears. Also booting up is slower since SR2. Any suggestions?

Ive been have the same kind of problems. Sometimes a couple minutes
between hit shut down and when it final does.

I have been through all the links suggested without luck. It seems a
number of people are having this problem.
Maybe it was the last Microsoft Update, the one after SP2, that sort
of fits my time line when it started.
