Hi,

I got an error (
Error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2

0000: 53 79 73 74 65 6d 20 45 System E

0050: 62 38 65 30 b8e0 ).

A blue screen appeared for less than a second and my PC
just switched off immediately. I only had windows
explorer open at the time and wasn't really doing any
intensive stuff...

Just before the error I tried to make a dialup connection
to my office. I don't think I did anything else since
startup.

Casper.

The 1000007e Stop Message is essentially identical with the 0000007e stop
code. It means that a system thread generated an exception which the error
handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this
problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or
system service, or some software issues. Check the Event Viewer
(EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

You didn't say under what circumstances this appears. I have several
articles linked on it, for particular situations, on

Make sure you have a clean file system before attempting and fixes.
Run chkdsk,
My computer/right click on xp drive and select properties/tools
check now, tick both boxes.
Reboot. Windows XP disk drive gets checked at startup

Could be a driver issue.
Get the system to stay on the blue screen and you'll see the name of the
driver.

control panel/system/advanced/startup and recovery settings
Uncheck automatically restart.

Check for unsigned drivers

start/run
sigverif

Replace any unsigned drivers with ones from windows update or the
manufacturers website. Signed drivers have been tested and passed to work
with windows xp.

check for corrupt system files

start/run
sfc/scannow

It may be a bad memory module at the root of the problem
Download and run the windows memory diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Or if you have more than one memory module, try interchanging them,
the bios power on memory test does not always find all memory errors.
