I ran the XP backup for the first time the other night- saved the file on a
backup drive. I wasn't able to create a floppy when I was prompted (at the
end); I assumed I would be able to create the floppy at a later backup- which
hasn't been the case (I've done a couple of backups by now).
If the machine gets wrecked and I need to restore from the backup, will I
need the floppy after all?

Yes.

Surely you're not depending on that feeble backup program MS supplies to
protect your valuable data!? You'll be sorry if you do.

You don't need the floppy to restore.
You do need to floppy to do an Automated system Recovery. Suggest reading
Help.

The floppy you can make is the ASR (Automatic System Recovery) and you
would have had to choose that backup method before starting the backup.
It's the third choice on the wizard screen.

The floppy would let you start and reload the backup in the event something
trashed things so bad you couldn't get windows to start but the hardware was
all OK. PUt the floppy in, add the Cds when asked for.

But, in the absece of a failure like that, your backups will restore fine.
You don't need the floppy. You only need the floppy to do the ASR. Also,
the floppy and the backup made at the same time go together; another backup
can't be used with th floppy.

It's best to do one ASR full back, then another full back later, and then
follow with incrementals, whatever you want to do.

Just my opinion
