Backup Data and System

I am using XP Pro. When I try to backup my data (and system) to an external
HD, I am asked (using the Wizard) to insert a floppy disk. My laptop has NO
floppy drive, only a CD/DVR drive. The backup of data works but no recovery
disk is created. I try to enter my external HD address (E bur the system
insists that I must use a floppy drive! How can I create a backup with no
floppy?! Thanks.

If your motherboard supports it, floppy drives are less than US$10.

I haven't seen them that cheap but I use a USB Teac (even works on
servers) for about $32.

M$ insists on a floppy for that purpose.

This is with the ASR wizard in NT backup, correct? It must have a floppy;
there is no way around it. You could try with an external floppy drive.
But if it works to create the ASR floppy make sure you test it.

Better yet don't use ntbackup and the ASR process. The restore is quite
cumbersome, and in addition I never got it to fully restore the system to
the working state it was in when the backup program was run. Some programs
did not work after the restore.

Long ago I moved to a drive imaging program as a backup solution saving
those images to a hard drive in an external enclosure, connected by USB.
Currently I use Acronis True Image Home version 10 which works in both XP
and Vista. It can create images on a drive or partition basis, or clone the
drive. It also does file backup. Restores can be done on a file, partition
or drive basis. Images can be full, differential or incremental.
