xp backup

Lloyd;
If your computer manufacturer felt their customers do not need NTBACKUP, you
are not licensed for NTBACKUP.
Contact the manufacturer for details if necessary.
Otherwise if a back-up program is needed, you need to get a 3rd party
program.

Are you sure? They made it sound like there is a utility included on the
WinXP CD that I can get for backing up files, if I can find it, I have heard
before that XP includes this, just does not seem to exist on my 4 CD's,
anyone know?
Thanks,
Lloyd

it says to put in CD, I have 4 CD's from the box, they all say 'system
restore' on them, none contain ntbackup.msi, can I download an XP backup
program? I got a new Maxtor 80gb external but can't get a backup program
going.
Thanks for any help,
Lloyd

You can download ntbackup.msi from here:

Lloyd;
NTBACKUP is an optional program and OEMs are not required to include it,
many choose not to.

If by "They" you mean "Microsoft" - they are not the support for your
Microsoft Windows XP you are using - the people who sold you the computer
and OEM version of Windows XP are.

There is a difference between OEM and RETAIL versions of Windows XP and one
of them is who supports it. Microsoft supports RETAIL, the OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer) supports the OEM copies.

However, I disagree with the fact you are not licensed for it..

Since not all vendors include the actual source code for XP, you can
download a copy here: http://home.comcast.net/~cerelli/ntbackup.msi

(If you don't trust that direct link, go here:
http://www.olymug.org/tipsfromtheweb504.htm )

Why I think that you ARE licensed for its use is this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311246

Which clearly implies that OEMs are known to leave out certain folders when
configuring their copies of XP - and just because it is not there does not
mean you aren't licensed for its use.

Lloyd:

Look for a "value add" folder on your hard drive. My Toshiba notebook
likewise did not have backup installed but it was included along with
several other programs in the value add folder on the notebook's hard
drive. Or you can follow the advice you received about downloading
it.

No, he's wrong. You are licensed to use NTBackup. You can't get it
from the WinXP CDs you have because you don't have a WinXP CD. You
have a set of Restore CDs provided by your hardware manufacturer.
They have the OS, applications they decided to bundle with it, and any
other junk software they felt like throwing in. You won't be able to
pick and choose stuff using these CDs; you will only be able to use
them to return your system to the same state it was when you unboxed
it.
