XP Backup

For the second time I am trying to follow the suggestion of an expert: this
time to backup the hard drive (the first time I forgot what it was): the
instructions to go to Program/Accessories/System Tools/Backup was
unsuccessful because "Backup" is missing.

What am I missing?

Probably NTBackup, especially if you are running XP Home. The application
should be on your XP CD in the ValueAdd folder, check this link from my
website:
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_locate_the_backup_utili.htm
However, i wouldn't use NTBackup for backing up my files or system. I much
poreer thrid party software sucxh as Acronis True Image. It isn't free so
you will have to buy it, but i use it to image my drives on a regular basis

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on XP
Home. If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the CD, in
\ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by doubleclicking the
file ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Also see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

In my view, however, the built-in Windows backup tool is the poorest
available. It's worth spending a little money to buy a much better
tool, such as Acronis True Image.
