XP backup to external HDD

I am trying to image my whole hard drive onto an external hard drive using
the Windows facility through programs/accessories/system tools/backup. I
select the radio button for back up all information on this computer, select
the external hard drive and then start. I get the following message "Backup
Status
The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The operation was
aborted." If I select particular folders like My Documents, they copy fine.
Any ideas> Cobby

That app will not create an image.
To create an Image you should use specific software eg, TrueImage or Ghost
etc

If you have a floppy drive, go back and reread the instructions more
carefully. If you don't have a floppy drive, do not choose to create the
ESR disk. Or, figure out how to create a bootable ESR CD.
Without the ESR, what you lose is the ability to recover a completely
trashed hard drive that won't boot in any way.

The recommendations for Ghost or Acronis are decent if you have the $50 to
spare. Or, you can get a floppy drive for about $10 these days.

Acronis is even cheaper here, a minor miracle :)

Forget about using expensive image makers and the inept Windows backup.
Google XXClone, get the freeware version, reformat the external drive you
were attempting to back up to, and use XXClone to make a complete back up of
the drive you were trying to back up. Simple, easy and it works! Saved my
behind more times than I want to admit!
