WIN XP backup does not start. Seems to hang on "looking
for backup devices" with backup device present (CDRW) and
functional (Roxio Direct CD).

I managed to backup to CDRW's in the past.

Someone any idea?

Thanks, Foeke.

Is that the only device you had connected before when you
used it ?? Meaning, I use it too with cd direct, but I
also have other devices connected that it could use. CD
Direct is just tricking it and will backup to it , but it
may not recognize it when it is the only device connected.

No configuration changes that I know of. That is a few
new, for my machine, USB devices have been connected
(flash cards) since my last successfull backup, but on
the machine itself nothing has changed hardware wise.

Hmmmm, I had this problem a month or so ago after a new install. A few
problem free backups, then I connected my digital camera via USB and
ran into the same hang on "looking for backup device". However, I
never associated the two and assumed it was something I did when
windows were popping from either CD-RW insertion or the camera
connecting (I click through/close a little to fast most of the time).

After looking for solutions for a couple of days, I just reformatted
and started over. Everything has been running fine since - backups
write to the hard drive 5 times per week via a VB script I wrote and
then burn the backups to CD-RWs through Nero using the same VB script
once a week. The two week rotation cleans off old backup data as
CD-RWs come due for an overwrite....but anyway.

Since the rebuild, I haven't connected my camera (no need). Now I am
curious - I will connect my camera when I get home to see if ntbackup
hangs again.

No issues with USB connection device connect or disconnect of camera
or smart reader. Doesn't mean USB isn't possible the problem but it
didn't re-occur for me.

Good Luck, this one drove me nuts - I don't like being stumped.
