XP Backup Lacks 98 MSBACKUP Features

I recently upgraded to XP for my file server and note a couple of
shortcomings for the built in Backup Program Ntbackup

1) It will not write Directly to CDR/CRDW/DVDR. You to have to Write to a
local drive and then copy to Burnable media

2) There is no Software compression. If you want compression, you have to
Zip after making the backup, then copy to the Burnable media

3) It won't read the QIC format of Win98 compressed Backups.

I can get along without 3, but 1 and 2 are quite an inconvenience. Is there
a way to resolve within NT, or do I need to find a 3rd party product?
Ntbackup provides an easy to use and familiar interface. Other Software
I've used comes up short in these respects.

The standard answer to this question is:

"NT backup was never intended to be a full-fledged
backup solution."

Truer words were never said.

Go 3rd party.

I use NovaBack myself:

When I upgraded to XP, I didn't want to part with Win98 backup. So, while I
had one computer running XP and the other running Win 98 I found where
Win98 backup was located and carefully copied the files over to the XP
computer. Eventually I was able to get Win98 backup to run perfectly on the
XP computer.

Bob,

Do you know how you got MSbackup to run under XP (How to install)
I agree, 98 is a better solution, but didn't want to spend a lot of time
trying to get it to work..

This is why I use winzip - compatible with any Windows version. Not hardware
and software dependant other than having to use a zip program to compress.

Sorry I haven't responded to this sooner. I used to have a Win 98 and WinXP
computer connected to a network. I found where Win98 backup was located on
the win 98 computer and then copied all the files in that directory over to
the XP computer. Once copied, I then tried to run backup from the XP
computer. I can't remember exactly what happened next but I think that I
got a message that a file couldn't be found. I then located the file on the
Win 98 computer and kept repeating this until I didn't get the error any
more. Eventually, it worked. Also, I selected the Win 98 compatibility
mode to run backup.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob,

I tried the same method as you and did not have the same results. There was
a DLL conflict. So, the way I did get it to work was copy the entire
backup98 directory and it's subdirectories to my XP computer. One of the
subdirectories was "system". I then created a simple batch file to launch
win98 backup that added the system directory to the path when launching only
for that session. Works fine.

Set path=%path%;c:\Program Files\Backup98\System
Start MSBACKUP.exe

Thanks. It is a better product in many ways.
