XP andomly shuts down applications.

I'v just bought a split-new computer bundled with MS XP
home. Every so often it just shuts down whatever
application I'm using, sometines with an error message,
sometimes not. I can't remember what it says when it does
bring up an error though. Help me. I was just starting
to think that Microsoft had brought out a usable operating
system. Now I'm starting to get cynical again.
