I have a desktop running XP Home SP1. This comment may fall into the
"well, duh!" category, but I just realized that with XP, you don't need
programs like WinZip or WINRAR to open or compress ZIP files. XP has its
own built-in zip (compressed) program.

All kinds of goodies tucked away in XP. Winzip and WinRAR both offer
features that the built in tool does not have but for basic
zipping/unzipping, it works quite well.
