In order to use the personal web server functionality on
Frontpage, do I have to upgrade from Home Edition to XP.
Many thanks.

There is no Personal Web Server in Windows XP Home Edition.

Personal Web Server Is Not Included with Windows XP Home Edition

The recommended system configuration for Microsoft FrontPage® version 2002
is a computer running Microsoft Windows® XP Professional with a Pentium III
processor and 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM.

Nicholas,

Many thanks for your response. May I just clarify one
point.

Sometime ago when I was using FrontPage, in the pre XP
days, FrontPage was able to configure your own PC so as
to set-up a personal web server. You could then design
your own web sites and effectively publish them on your
own PC before uploading to your ISP. The personal web
server was obviously very fast and enabled you to get
everything correct before uploading.

Are you saying for me to do the same with XP, I will need
the Professional version? The FrontPage web site you
referred to does recommend XP Professional, but it is a
bit ambiguous in that it also states both Professional
and Home edition. I would not want to use my PC as a web
server to the wider community only as a "personal" web
server before issuing with my ISP.

PWS is obsolete and no longer provided. Microsoft now provide IIS
(Internet Information Server) but with Windows XP Pro only. that would
be suitable for the FrontPage that comes in OfficeXP (Office 2002) but I
am not sure about earlier versions

You have to upgrade to XP Pro if you want IIS.
For other Web servers you could use Apache or Xitami
for free (they don`t support ASP though, but can use Perl
or PHP etc).
