XP and Distinctive Ring

Does XP support distinctive ring at all? My modem
definitely does but the reading I am doing is making me
suspicious of XP.
I am using third party fax software which also does
support distinctive ring.
The problem seems to be that I can't enable Distinctive
Ring in XP Control Panel.

Any insights? Greatly appreciated!!

This issue hasn't been around for a couple of weeks, but it used to get
asked a lot. The "official" answer is that XP does not support
distinctive ring. However, if you do a Google or Google Groups search
for "xp distinctive ring" (w/o quotes) you should find several alleged
workarounds. I have no information about whether any of these solutions
actualy works, but the alternative is to buy a 3rd party hardware device
that detects distinctive ring and routes an incoming call either to your
computer, your phone, your answering machine, or a separate fax machine.

You need a special software like VentaFax, for example
(www.ventafax.com). Distinctive ring service is available even in
Windows 2000 and XP.
