Is there a way to dual boot XP and 98?
I have a HP Laptop with xp home installed.
All my files and programs are on there so I don't want to have to format the
drive.
Is there a way to dual boot after xp is installed?

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Gary!
Why it is not advisable ? well as you know that XP ia a later version
than Windows 98.Now XP and other 2k platform OS run best on NTFS
Platform. Thus if you convert XP to NTFS during installation then if you
try to load Win 98SE after XP there will be a messup.
There will be also problem in the bootloader as has been mentioned in
both the articles [the links which I have provided].
Best way to slove back up your data go for WIN 98 SE installation first
followed by XP.

I'm also curious about what ssg will say ...

My take is that I can't really think why it would be necessary. The
vast majority of programs will work equally well with XP as with 98, and
all your files will be readable in XP, even if they started life in 98.
You can even convert the file system from FAT to NTFS for greater
security and reliablity of the data.

Unless there is a compelling reason to keep 98, (e.g. not sure that
laptop is sufficient specification to run 98, a key program simply won't
run in XP, etc.) just to keep things simply I would recommend using XP
only.

You will need partitioning software if you don't want to start over clean,
and with the restore procedure from HP, it would be mandatory, as it only
restores with NTFS. Most partitioning software comes with a bootloader,
check the help files for the software for setup details.

HiGary!
With due respect to you as well as to Michel Stevens I personally feel
that stick with Win XP.It's far far advanced, stable, user friendly than
Win 98.Yes!from all angles.Hope you won't mind;stay with the latest
technology don't look back.

No, sorry but I have to totally disagree here. Having both is totally
understandable especially to/for those who are trying to learn XP in the
meantime, and if for any other reasons, so be it. As for XP running better
on NTFS, nope. It depends what your needs are. And for most users, Fat32
is just fine.

It doesn't really matter why he wants to have both operating systems
installed (I do, without ever having an issue for over two years) and can
promise you for a totally different reason.

You are missing the point here.....this was the original question:

"Is there a way to dual boot XP and 98?"

Repected madam ,
Yes!I know that I got diverted from the original point.
Gary's original query was " Is there a way to dual boot after xp is
installed?"
It depends which OS he is going to install,if it is Linux then it's a
different story. But he wanted to get Win 98 after XP installation. So I
shall stick to that point.

But I earlier adviced him it is always safe and better to install win 98
earlier than XP and explined him the reasons also.
Finally Michael Stevens also suggested a method with his explanation

Hi Gary,
Why do you need Win98 ?
WinXP is most probably perfectly able to run your existing programs.
And it is certainly able to read your existing files.

Could you elaborate on what your exact problem is ?

I agree. I like XP. But my church management software won't work with xp. So
I am tring to dual boot so that I can continual to use Servant Keeper. I
don't want to have to buy a upgrade if I don't have to. I have tried to get
xp to run it as 98 or me but it still don't work.

Thanks for all the advise.

S. Sengupta,

First, hundreds of users have used this procedure to create a multiboot
environment after XP is already installed. This procedure is safe and works
if the user follows the steps, correctly and in order. If I can ever work
out how to install after the fact with XP on an NTFS partition, I'll make a
lot of people happier.

As for NTFS being a superior file system, in many respects you're right.
But for some user's its more of a problem with permissions issues and the
like. Granted for today's larger hard disks, NTFS's default cluster size of
4K is far superior to the cluster size that FAT32 would use for the same
size drive.

Another consideration is that there are some program that simply will not
run under XP, regardless of compatibility mode. So a good number of user's
have a legitimate need to run 98 or Me as a second operating system.

In this user's case, since the PC probably came NTFS formatted, they will
need a 3rd party boot manager, like BootIt NG or the Powerquest equivalent.
