xp and 2000

I Can ping the box itself, its dhcp assigned address not
by name on xp. i can't ping one to the other
 
Greetings bill,

Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled. It is intended for direct
connections to the Internet. If you have installed a third party firewall,
make sure it isn't blocking access between the machines. Ensure NetBIOS over
TCP/IP is enabled on all computers. Details here.
