This is driving me batty. The computer (a Dell E510 running Win XP MM)
frequently finds new media when none is added. Moments latter I get an
RUN DDL AS APP error message. Clickinking on the send error report
sometimes directs me to a third party wo makes a patch.

Following the instructions to the letter (erase the old driver, install
the new driver, reboot etc) does not fix the problem.

-----

And while I'm here, why would some upgrades crash the computer? I
tried to download MusicMatch and it crashed the system. They are no
help since they want me to pay for a subscription befroe they'll answer
questions. I can live without their software.

----

On more thing:
When I open CONTROL PANEL>ADD NEW HARDWARE the system crashes during
the search.

Any help on any or all of the above wuld be earnestly appreciated.
Thanks.

What does "finds new media" mean?
--That's all it says. A box appears on the bottom of the screen. There
is a close tab. clicking on the box does nothing (there was no new
media added).

What does the error message say, exactly?
EventTpe:BEX P1:rundll32.exe P2:5.1.2600.2180 P3:41107dbc
P4:setupapi.dll P5:5.1.26--.2180 P6411096b0 P7:0004644e
P8:c0000409 P9;00000000

Opening up tech information reveals:
C;\DOCUME~1\PHILIP~1\LOCAL~`\Temp\WER6a5d.dir00\00\rundll32.exe.mdmp
C;\DOCUME~1\PHILIP~1\LOCAL~`\Temp\WER6a5d.dir00\00\appcompat.txt

What "third party" are you sometimes directed to?
--Let this go for now. I'm not on that computer at the moment and
thirty miles away. I think it may be another issue related to a USP
converter.

What "patch" are you talking about?
--Ditto

Thank you.

"Media" can also refer to recordable media, usually CDs or DVDs. Could you
be having a problem with CD or DVD recording software? The name of the third
party and a description of the patch would be helpful.

I'm aware that media could mean CD, DVD or ZIP disks. None were added.

Could it be interpreting internet activity? There is a DSL line that is
generally online.

I have had this computer for about a month. The problems began about
two weeks ago. I have accessed both DVD drives on many occasions with
no problem. I have also burned both CDs and DVDs in the drive that is
capable of those functions.

I will furnish the third party information in a few hours when I return
to the home system.

I appreciate your assistance. Many thanks.

After a crash, I send Microsoft a report. Their response (Mircosoft
Online Crash Analysis) directs me to a third party provider, Magic
Control Technology. I am to contact them to download U2SWDM.SYS. After
a long search I found it, downloaded it and installation instruction
which I believe I've follwed exactly. The problem persists.

Again, many thanks.
