When the new OS that MS is working on comes out will they release a fix to
shut off activation on XP once and for all??

Or will they just leave everybody hangin and turn off the activation servers
and say tuff sheeeet ya need to make us richer and buy the new OS

Tom

When they switch of the servers they will do something else, most likely a patch removing activation. Remember retail and upgrade customers have a forever license.

Tom;
To add a little to what David said...
Do not expect it as soon as Vista is released.
Instead expect it many years later, at the point the Windows XP technology
is far outdated.
Since Windows 98 is still in use 7 years later, use that as a starting
point.

MS has yet to announce what they will do, but my guess is that they will
use the activation servers for XP AT LEAST as long as the official
support life of XP, and I'd bet even long than that.

WinXP activation won't be shut off this side of the decade. As for the "new"
OS, we'll have to see the guts of it first to see if it is new. An article
here (in PC Authority) states, MS claims they'll be pricing the Pista
release at $AUD 150.00 to curb piracy as more people will be inclined to buy
it. I don't believe it but if they do, I'll be shocked in to buying it, as
SuSE Linux is $AUD 149.00.

Even if it were free, I wouldn't buy it or install it until SP 1 comes out,
maybe not then.

My Buddy has XP Pro pre SP1, never updates but his runs sweeter than mine,
boots quicker. He's rigorous about his AV and firewall and doesn't download
from dodgy sites. Something to be said for that approach.

From a common sense standpoint they will continue activation until they
drop support, before any "disable activation requirement" patch would be
released. YMMV

Makes Win2K SP4+Rollup look like a step forward. I know people with Win98,
ME, NT 4, 2K in the same boat. Makes you think what the WinXP update
security hype(rbole) is all about. It's like the Ministry of Sh!t controls
with fear like all other entities of perceived power.
