XP-64 = Longhorn ?

Nope, Longhorn is the next generation of Windows. It has a new core and
new components.

Windows XP 64bit is just a new version of Windows XP that will support
64bit processors which will also support new 64bit applications :)

Nathan,

Just to be entirely accurate.

Windows XP 64-bit is already a shipping product.
It was released for the Intel Itanium II processor some time ago, what I
suspect the original poster was referring to is the Windows XP 64-bit
Edition for Extended Systems that will support the AMD 64-bit processes
(Opteron and Athlon64), as well as the new Intel processors that support
EM64T.

Thanks for the replies, that at least set me straight. I saw the download
for the XP 64-bit (for Ext Sys) while trying to locate information on the
Longhorn product. I have an Athlon 64 3000+ and considered the download
just to see if there is any reason to upgrade from Win2000Pro. I am pleased
with the operation of 2000 but like many of the features of XP and don't
want to shell out $150 for XP if this new Longhorn is coming real soon (I am
sure MS wouldn't mind taking my $$$).

Anyone know the expected release for Longhorn? I have read about beta
testers for it and wondered how to see or get a test copy, just for preview.

Thanks again,
kw

Thanks Mike,

I was thinking of XP 64bit for Extended Systems. I usually don't think
of the Itanium processors as they make me think of the business sector
and I kinda forget about them :)

Ken,

Longhorn does not have a specific date set for release. An estimate
that I have read from several news sources say sometime in 2006.
Development could go extremely well and it could be released sooner, or
there could be new technology or something that holds the development back.

As far as I know, Longhorn is not in Beta yet. There is no way to
obtain a copy of the Alpha (that I know of) unless you had a MSDN
subscription and requested the PDC build. If you were at PDC, they gave
out DVD's and I'm not sure, but I know there is another more recent
build they used at WinHEC. I don't know if that build was given out like
the PDC build was though.

Hopefully, some of us will get a chance to beta test Longhorn when it
reaches that point. This is the period of time where all the bugs,
kinks, hardware and software compatibility, and the like all get worked
out, fixed up, and finalized. This is when you will want to start
looking at your upgrade options.

For now, I would suggest trying Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit
Extended Systems. There is a trial here:

Thanks Nathan and Mike, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I just
downloaded my copy from the link and will install that on another drive to
see how it works. I have an Athlon 64 3000+ and wanted something to take
advantage of it. I don't mind playing with buggy software ( hell, Microsoft
has me used to it by now...) or the beta versions. I just want to see
something new.

Nathan, is that Alpha version of Longhorn available from any sources? Does
it need to be registered like XP?

Thanks,
kw

I am not sure where Longhorn is available. I know MSDN Subscribers and
those who visited the PDC Conference had access to one build. Other
than that, I don't think there is any way to get a copy of it. It
doesn't really matter though as most of it is incorporating new
theories, ideas, etc., and is not designed for compatibility, stability,
or general use yet (as far as I know).

Fair enough. Thanks for you help with this.

Yes, but that can only be obtained by those who were at WinHEC and I'm
not sure if they even handed that one out like they did with the PDC
DVD's ;)
